Fishing
at Kendall Point Lodge on the Winnipeg River
The Winnipeg River is well-known for its
trophy-size fish. Many have earned Master Angler Awards on the River.
We invite you down to try some of Manitoba's best Walleye, Northern
Pike and Smallmouth Bass fishing.
There are many big Pike in the Winnipeg River and just
as many stories of the 'big one' that got away! Walleye are very plentiful,
up to 10 pound monsters in the depths with the average in the 2 lb.
range - the tastiest size for a shore lunch. It
is unlike any other body of water you have fished in the past. Vast
lake-like stretches up to 3 miles wide, narrow channels with fast current,
sandy bays, lily pads, rocky points, and an always changing depth and
bottom structure provide a healthy fishery with plentiful stocks. Depths
can vary up to 100 feet or more in areas, and water levels can fluctuate
by several feet during the year. The natural habitat,
combined with conservation efforts have resulted in a healthy fishery
providing plentiful stocks.
Spring Fishing Spring fishing usually arrives early at Kendall
Point Lodge because of the fast current in this river system. Northern
pike are usually found in 4 -24 inches of water where they will warm themselves
in the sun. As the water begins to warm, walleyes move into the shallows
and can be found in 4 to twelve feet. Bait that works well are 1/4 to
1/2 oz jigs tipped with a minnow or twister tail, small crankbaits and
rattle traps.
Summer
Fishing The month of June can be unpredictable!
The fish are constantly moving around following bait fish and can be
found in anywhere from 2 to 40 ft of water! Even though the fishing
can be absolutely fantastic at this time, walleyes spread out throughout
the river system until late June. As the end of the month approaches,
walleyes begin to move to their summer residence. Trolling crank baits
or spoons off the main current and into weedy bays will produce large
fish.
Using top-water or shallow running crank baits for smallmouth can prove
to be very rewarding. Casting anything with orange or chartreuse is
productive for smallmouth.
Northern pike fishing is absolutely incredible with an abundance of
28 to 38 inch pike cruising the shorelines. Using buzz baits, spinner
baits, rapalas or just about anything else will land you these trophy
fish. Pike over 40 inches can be found on the edges of the weedy bays.
July is the perfect time for all the different species of fish on these
waters. The weather is usually very stable and predictable, just as
is the fishing. The constantly moving water stays cooler for the bait
fish which remain in their regular areas. August fishing stays much
the same.
Fall
Fishing The Winnipeg River does not experience the
fall turnover as a lake would at this time. Walleyes are found in the
usual summer spots moving a little more into the current.
Fishing at Kendall Point Lodge is always at its finest with many trophy
fish caught throughout the season.
